Counselling and Psychotherapy in Dartington and online

My Approach

I work relationally, which means our therapeutic relationship becomes an important part of the healing process. I'll help you explore what brings you to counselling at this point in your life and what matters most to you. Together, we'll pay attention not just to what you're telling me, but how you relate to others and the world around you.

My approach draws from humanistic and existential thinking, focusing on your unique experience and helping you find meaning in your struggles. I work at a deeper level too, connecting with what we might call the 'soul', the essence of who you are beneath life's pressures and challenges. This isn't about religion or spirituality necessarily, but about honouring the fullness of your human experience in the world.

I'm person-centred, which means I believe you are the expert on your own life. My role is to provide a safe, non-judgemental space where you can explore your experience at your own pace, develop greater self-awareness, and discover your own path forward.

Counselling or Psychotherapy?

While the terms are often used interchangeably, counselling typically focuses on specific issues or shorter-term work, whilst psychotherapy tends to involve deeper, longer-term exploration of patterns and relationships. In practice, the work we do together will be shaped by what you need, whether that's a few sessions to work through a particular challenge or a longer journey of self-discovery.

I offer a free 20-minute telephone consultation to anyone considering therapy. This initial conversation gives us both a chance to explore what you're looking for and whether we might work well together. There's no pressure or commitment. It's simply an opportunity to see if I feel like the right therapist for you.

How I Work

I offer both face-to-face sessions from my practice in Dartington and online therapy via secure video calling. Both approaches have their unique benefits, and the choice is entirely yours.

Face-to-face sessions take place in Dartington, offering a calm environment dedicated to your wellbeing where we can work together on whatever is troubling you.

Online therapy appeals to many people, whether you have mobility challenges, a busy schedule, or simply feel more comfortable in your own space. Some clients find they can be more open in familiar surroundings, and online work means we can maintain continuity if circumstances change.

Whether we work together online or face-to-face, the quality of our relationship remains at the heart of the work.

Issues I Can Help With

I work with people facing a wide range of life's challenges. Many clients struggle with anxiety and depression, relationship difficulties, or patterns that keep repeating. Work-related stress is something I understand particularly well, including workplace pressures, career transitions, imposter syndrome, or work-life balance questions.

People often come during major life transitions like bereavement, divorce, or health diagnoses. Some carry the weight of past trauma, while others grapple with identity questions or cultural challenges that feel isolating. I also work with those exploring deeper questions about meaning, purpose, and living authentically.

Whatever brings you to therapy, there's space for your experience here. Sometimes people worry their problems aren't "serious enough" for counselling, but if something is troubling you, it deserves attention and care.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if counselling is right for me?

If something is troubling you or affecting your wellbeing, counselling can help. You don't need to be in crisis. Many people come when they're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply want to understand themselves better. The free 20-minute consultation is a good way to explore whether therapy feels right for you at this point in your life.

What's the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

While the terms are often used interchangeably, counselling typically focuses on specific issues or shorter-term work, whilst psychotherapy tends to involve deeper, longer-term exploration of patterns and relationships. In practice, the work we do together will be shaped by what you need, whether that's a few sessions or a longer journey of self-discovery.

How long will I need therapy?

This varies enormously from person to person. Some people find a few sessions helpful for working through a specific issue, while others choose longer-term work for deeper exploration. We'll regularly review how things are going and what feels most helpful for you. There's no pressure to commit to a particular timeframe.

What happens in the first session?

After our initial 20-minute consultation, the first full session gives us time to explore what's brought you to therapy and what you're hoping for. I'll explain how I work and answer any questions you have. There's no pressure to share more than feels comfortable - we'll go at your pace from the very beginning.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes, everything we discuss is confidential. The only exceptions are if you're at serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or if there are safeguarding concerns involving children or vulnerable adults. I follow BACP's ethical guidelines, and we can discuss confidentiality more fully in our sessions.

How often will we meet?

How often will we meet?Sessions are weekly to maintain continuity and momentum. However, sessions can be more frequent in certain circumstances.

What if I don't feel comfortable talking about certain things?

You're always in control of what you share and when. Part of my role is to help create a safe space where you can explore difficult feelings, but you'll never be pushed to discuss anything you're not ready for. Sometimes what feels too difficult to talk about initially becomes easier as trust builds between us.

How much does it cost and can I get help with fees?

Sessions are £60 for 50 minutes, payable by bank transfer before each session. I offer concessionary rates from £35 for students and people on lower incomes. Please get in touch to discuss availability. Unfortunately, I don't currently work with insurance providers, but you can check if your policy covers private therapy costs.
